Would you believe a suffering flower in the wrong zone with incongruous water, sunlight, and nutrients for its type was “bad at growing”? Or would you think it just needs a little different care to flourish? Everyone can grow to be “good at math” and I’d love to help you get there!
a few details
My name is Dahlia. I am currently a graduate student finishing up my thesis! I’ll have a Master’s degree in Mathematics just a few months from now–as soon as my thesis is finished. I’ve been tutoring professionally for over five years, and have started work on a new student-focused textbook for Calculus I and II. Both in my tutoring and writing, my focus is on making math understandable to any student who is willing to learn!

why I’m qualified
Head Tutor at University Mathematics Laboratory
(Tutor 2018 – 2021, Head Tutor 2019-2021)
After working for a year helping students with their homework and teaching exam reviews, I became head tutor for all lower division math classes at my university (Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus I, Calculus II). In that position, I was responsible for training other tutors how to teach students and coordinating with professors as well as continuing to help students one-on-one. I also reorganized the lab to function during the major shut-down of the pandemic. Every semester, I held final exam reviews with over 200 students in attendance!
Private Tutor
(2019 – current)
I started private tutoring in 2019 and have since grown a wide base of students. I’ve tutored both in-person and online, using Zoom and Ziteboard as platforms for online communication. Now that most of us have adapted well to it through the pandemic, I primarily use Zoom for my online meetings. I have had students in a variety of age ranges, with differing stages of life, mental health concerns, and levels of math confidence. I’ve had several students who, after hiring me for one class, continue to reach out for occasional help in their future math classes! I’m happy to say we have built an excellent rapport and stay in touch as friends.
B.S. in Mathematics (graduated April 2021)
I began majoring in mathematics as a freshman, and then decided to switch to mathematics education. However, after a two-year hiatus to do service in Mexico, I changed my mind and re-entered school as a Physics-Astronomy major, then later switched to another education degree, one that combined several physical sciences. While I gained a lot from my education and science classes, I eventually realized that math was my one true love, and decided to make one final switch to a BS in mathematics. The payoff to such a long decision-making process was a certainty that I was really doing what I wanted most.
Master’s Degree in Mathematics (in progress)
(graduation: 2023)
This is where I am now! In my undergraduate degree, I focused on a “pure math” emphasis, but for my master’s degree, I am focusing on more applied math topics. As I’ve progressed in the program, I’ve developed greater skill in computer programming (mostly Python) as well as applying mathematical methods to various disciplines. And I’ve continued tutoring!
As a graduate student, I’ve been given teaching responsibilities as well as performing research. I have worked as the primary instructor for Pre-Calculus (writing exams, teaching lectures, & assigning final grades) for three consecutive semesters! I also taught a Business Calculus class and was a TA for Calculus I and Abstract Algebra. I feel like I can say I’ve experienced being a math instructor from a variety of roles!
